ALEXANDER STREET SEWER SEPARATION AND ROAD RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
(JOHN STREET TO CHARLES STREET)*
The Project |
The Alexander Street Sewer Separation and Road Reconstruction project will replace and renew the underground City services on Alexander Street, from John Street to Charles Street. The proposed works include replacing the sanitary sewer, installing a new storm sewer to remove stormwater from the sanitary sewer system, as well as replacing the existing watermain installed in (approximately) 1910 with a new watermain to meet today’s standards for water distribution systems. Road reconstruction will include installing a new roadbed, asphalt, curb and gutter and replacing sidewalks on both the north and south sides of Alexander Street throughout the project limits. The new sidewalks will be 1.5 metres wide allowing more space for pedestrians while complying with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Project drawings can be found here. |
The Benefits |
This has been identified as a necessary project that will provide significant benefits to all water, wastewater and road users; a 100+ year-old watermain will be replaced ensuring a safe and secure supply of drinking water for years to come. The existing combined sewer system will be replaced, which will help eliminate basement flooding and stormwater entering the sanitary sewer system. The project will also leave residents with a new road and sidewalks, improving conditions of these public assets for local pedestrian, vehicular and cycle traffic. |
Construction Impacts |
Efforts will be made to ensure there is minimal impact to local residences; your patience in this matter is appreciated. However, there will be temporary lane closures and temporary impacts to driveways; driveway impacts will be communicated to individual residents by the contractor. Sidewalks may also be temporarily closed to facilitate construction, however a walkway will be maintained on at least one side of the road during the construction. |
The Cost |
The project budget for this project is $3.68 million. |
The Project Schedule |
City Council has approved construction funding for this project to proceed in 2021. The project timeline is expected to be:
