New Speed Indicator Signs Installed in Community Safety Zones

The City of Belleville has installed 18 new speed indicator signs across nine Community Safety Zones to encourage drivers to slow down and help improve safety in areas frequented by students and other vulnerable road users. 

The signs display the speed of approaching vehicles, providing drivers with an immediate reminder to check their speed and follow the posted speed limit. Two signs have been installed in each of the following Community Safety Zones: 

• Cannifton Road 
• Dundas Street East 
• Harmony Road 
• College Street East 
• Harder Drive 
• Palmer Road 
• Sidney Street, between Tracey Street and College Street 
• Sidney Street, between Moira Street and Bridge Street 
• Victoria Avenue 

The new signs were funded through the Province of Ontario’s Road Safety Initiatives Fund as part of the transition away from automated speed enforcement cameras. The funding supports municipalities in implementing alternative road safety measures to help address speeding and improve safety on local roads. 

Community Safety Zones are designated areas where public safety is of particular concern, including locations near schools. Drivers are reminded to pay close attention to posted speed limits, watch for children and pedestrians, and use extra caution when travelling through these areas. 

“These new signs provide another tool to remind drivers of the important role we all play in keeping our roads safe,” said Mayor Neil Ellis. “We encourage motorists to slow down, stay alert and be especially mindful when travelling through school areas and Community Safety Zones.” 

The City will continue to explore opportunities and initiatives aimed at improving road safety and encouraging responsible driving throughout the community.
