Street Sweeping

The City of Belleville has two street sweepers in its fleet which clean and maintain urban and rural streets and sidewalks. We sweep more than 900 lane kilometres of roads and 225 kilometres of sidewalks. Street sweeping runs from April to early November on both a scheduled and as-needed basis.

Street sweeping keeps roads safer and cleaner for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Removing sand and debris also helps reduce the amount of material that enters storm drains and protects our local waterways.

Spring street sweeping

The spring program removes winter salt, sand, dust and debris from roads, sidewalks and boulevards. Sweeping usually begins in April and continues through June, depending on weather conditions. Multiple passes may be needed to clean surfaces thoroughly.

Street sweeping priority is as follows:

  • Cycling lanes and main streets: Addressed first due to higher traffic and greater dust buildup.
  • Transit and collector roads: Swept after main streets.
  • Residential streets: Swept next, especially where curb and gutter collect winter material.
  • Rural roads: Swept last where curb and gutter are present.

Fall street sweeping

The fall sweep generally takes place from mid-October to early November. Crews focus on areas prone to drainage issues in spring and streets with many trees. Sweeping in fall helps keep roads clean, clear catch basins and reduce the risk of flooding during spring melt.

Residents can support fall sweeping by raking leaves and keeping nearby catch basins free of debris.
