Cycling and Active Transportation

Active transportation is any form of human-powered travel, such as walking, cycling, wheelchair use, skateboarding and scootering. Choosing active transportation can improve your health and reduce your transportation costs.

Our Commitment

The City of Belleville supports active, healthy and sustainable travel options. Since 2014, we have been investing in active transportation infrastructure, including bike lanes, multi-use paths and trails. We continue to expand this network through planned road reconstructions and stand-alone projects.

Since 2017 Belleville is proud to be designated as a bronze bicycle friendly community by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition.

Getting around

We have several different ways to cycle around the city safely:

Indicates where cyclists and motorists share the road.

Painted lanes reserved for cyclists, usually beside the curb.

Paved paths shared by people walking, rolling and cycling.

Scenic trails and paths for recreation and commuting. Some may allow motorized vehicles. Look for signage and always be aware.

Cycling Safety and Rules

Your bike is classified as a vehicle under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act. Cyclists on city roads must:

  • Obey all traffic laws. Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers.
  • Stay as close to the right edge of the road whenever possible.
  • Anyone under the age of 18 must wear an approved helmet.
