Belleville’s newest City Councillor, Kelly Henderson (McCaw), has been officially sworn into office. Mayor Neil Ellis, Chief Administrative Officer Matt MacDonald, Director, People and Corporate Services Marie Doherty, City Clerk Doug Irwin and family members joined her for the swearing-in ceremony at Belleville City Hall this afternoon.
Councillor Henderson will fill the seat that has been vacant since last month when former councillor Chris Malette took on his new role as Bay of Quinte Member of Parliament. Following a report from Corporate Services on options to fill the seat, Belleville City Council made the decision to appoint Councillor Henderson as the eighth place finisher in Ward 1 in the 2022 municipal election.
Councillor Henderson previously served on Belleville City Council from 2014-2022. She is an entrepreneur, business owner and currently works in the Experiential Learning Department at Loyalist College. During her last term on council, she served on a number of board and committees including the Belleville Police Service Board, Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward, Community and Human Services Committee, Hastings Quinte Emergency Services Committee and Hastings Quinte Long Term Care Committee. Councillor Henderson is a strong and passionate advocate for the welfare of all animals.
“I am pleased to be joining this council and look forward to getting started in this role,” said Councillor Kelly Henderson. “As your Ward 1 councillor, I remain committed to working with my colleagues on addressing the current housing crisis, helping to make Belleville the safest community in Ontario and continuing to advocate for our community.”
“On behalf of my colleagues on Belleville City Council, I would like to welcome Councillor Henderson,” said Mayor Neil Ellis. “I am confident that Councillor Henderson’s experience and knowledge will allow her to hit the ground running in this role and I look forward to what she will bring to the council horseshoe going forward.”
Councillor Henderson will participate in her first Belleville City Council meeting on June 9.
