NEW - Downtown Sidewalk Patio Permit
Downtown businesses may apply for a street patio or parklet to create new community spaces for patrons. Patios are leased from May 1 to October 31, 2023.
This project is in partnership with the Downtown District Business Improvement Association (DBIA) to enhance outdoor experiences that support a lively urban environment and solidify the Downtown District as a culinary and entertainment destination.

Road Permits
Working in the Right-of-Way
It's important you obtain the necessary permits and/or approvals prior to conducting any work in the right-of-way, in accordance with City By-law 2001-129.
Homeowners
If you require a service such as driveway widening, curb removal/cut, culvert installation or replacement, please contact us by email or call 613-967-3275. We will be happy to assist you.
Contractors
If you will be conducting work within City road allowance; including roads, sidewalks, boulevards, culverts, ditches and underground services, you must have a permit. Please contact us by email or call 613-967-3275.
Also, if you will be conducting work on City owned property outside road allowance, please complete and submit a Park Access permit.
Transporting a wide load
An oversize/overweight permit allows the movement of oversize/overweight vehicles, indivisible loads, objects or structures on City of Belleville roadways which exceed the limits set out in the Highway Traffic Act.
Permit application process:
- Review the permit guidelines and by-law
- Access the online application form.
- Complete and submit the application form.
- The application is reviewed within 48 hours and, if approved, a link is provided to complete payment and obtain the permit.
- Incomplete applications will not be processed.
- If travel is also required on Provincial Highways, please contact the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to receive the necessary permit.
Types of Permits:
The City of Belleville issues three (3) types of permits: Annual, Seasonal, and Single trip.
Annual Permits - Annual permits are valid for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of issuance.
Annual permits can be considered for vehicles with the following maximum dimensions:
Length: 12.5 metres
Width: 3.7 metres
Height: 4.26 metres
Seasonal Permits - Seasonal permits are issued to allow operators to move similar loads, vehicles, over the same route for a period of up to and including six (6) months.
Single Trip Permits - A single trip permit is issued to facilitate an oversize/overweight move for a one (1) way trip along a specified route for a limited time period:
Length: Combination vehicles from 23m to 45.75 metres, Single vehicle 12.5 metres
Width: From 2.61m to 4 metres
Height: 4.16 metres or greater
Weight: If Highway Traffic Act limits are exceeded, may require additional conditions at General Manager of Transportation and Operations Services' discretion.

Maximum weight:
- Maximum weight allowances are determined by the axle configurations and spacings and
gross weights set out in the Highway Traffic Act.
