Date:
July 22
Lighting Dates:
July 22-28
Lighting Colour:
Teal
Meaning:
I would like to proclaim July 22 as Fragile X Syndrome Awareness Day.
Fragile X syndrome is the most common known cause of inherited intellectual disability and the leading known single-gene cause of autism. Fragile X occurs when a single gene shuts down —a gene vital to normal brain function. Raising awareness for Fragile X is crucial as it helps to accelerate progress toward effective treatments and ultimately a cure.
Last year 385 locations around the world lit up to recognize Fragile X syndrome on July 22, helping bring a new level of awareness to this syndrome. This energy was able to highlight the research that is going on and brought significant hope to families everywhere.
