The next Belleville municipal election will be held on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. Nominations are now open.

Nominations in the City of Belleville are open for the offices of:

Municipal Office

  • Mayor (1) elected at large
  • Councillors (8)
    • 6 Councillors – Ward 1 (Belleville)
    • 2 Councillors – Ward 2 (Thurlow)

School Board Trustees

  • Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board Trustee (2) – Elected at large from the City of Belleville. Nominations to be filed with the Clerk of the City of Belleville.
  • Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board Trustee (2) – Elected for the area comprised of the City of Belleville, Township of Tyendinaga and the Town of Deseronto. Nominations to be filed with the Clerk of the City of Belleville.
  • Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario Trustee (1) – Elected at large for geographic Region 2 which is composed of all municipalities in the Counties of Leeds and Grenville, Frontenac, Hastings, Prince Edward, and Lennox and Addington. Nominations to be filed with the Clerk of the City of Kingston.
  • Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est Trustee (1) – Elected at large for geographic Region 2 which is composed of all municipalities in the Counties of Leeds and Grenville, Frontenac, Hastings, Prince Edward, and Lennox and Addington. Nominations to be filed with the Clerk of the City of Kingston.

Eligibility

You may be eligible to run in the municipal election if you:

  • Are a Canadian citizen
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Live in Belleville, or own or rent property in the city (or are the spouse of an owner or tenant)
  • Are not disqualified by law

Filing your Nomination

Those wishing to submit a nomination are encouraged to set up an appointment ahead of time to ensure the required staff are available.

To run for office in the City of Belleville municipal election, you must complete and file both a Nomination Paper and Endorsement Form.

Your nomination must include:

  • Endorsements from 25 eligible voters supporting the nomination (not required for school board trustees)
  • Valid government-issued photo identification, such as:
    • Ontario driver’s licence
    • Passport
    • Ontario health card
    • Canadian Citizenship card
  • The required nomination filing fee:
    • $200 for Mayor
    • $100 for all other offices
  • Any other documentation required by the City Clerk

Accepted payment methods for the nomination fee include cash, certified cheque, debit or money order. All nominations must be signed by the candidate.

Nominations may be filed in person or by an agent:

  • During regular business hours from May 1, 2026 to Aug. 20, 2026
  • On Nomination Day (Aug. 21, 2026) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
