Skating

The Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre offers skating programs for all ages and skill levels. Choose from public skating, shinny hockey and learn-to-skate lessons.

Recreational Skating Programs

Before each recreational skating session, please check in at the Customer Service Desk before entering the ice surface. Once you have checked in, attach your wristband to your skate or skate laces where it is clearly visible.

Pre-registration is required for all recreational skating sessions. Explore the skating options below and register online, in person or by phone at 613-966-4632.

Please note that skates and skating equipment rentals are not available.

Public Skates

  • Drop-in program (maximum 160 skaters, staffing levels may reduce capacity to 59)
  • CSA-approved helmets are strongly recommended
  • Skate aids are not allowed during these times
  • Ice monitor staff are present
  • Sign in at the Customer Service Desk and wear your wristband
  • Children under 10 must be supervised by a guardian over 16
  • Only skates are permitted on the ice (no other footwear)
  • Keep food and drink away from the ice surface (water is allowed)
  • Skate in the same direction as other skaters
  • Avoid horseplay, tag, profanity, skating backward, speed skating and figure skating
  • Avoid bringing cell phones, headsets, electronic devices, balls, pucks, sticks, chairs, pylons, toboggans or other items onto the ice
  • Do not carry children
  • Report all accidents and incidents to skate patrol staff
  • Conduct yourself respectfully and follow staff instructions

Family Skates

  • A drop-in program for practicing skating on a less busy ice surface (maximum 50 skaters)
  • CSA-approved helmets are required for all skaters (parents and children)
  • CSA-approved skate aids are allowed
  • Sign in at the Customer Service Desk and place your wristband on your skates or laces
  • Follow all public skate rules

Adult Public Skates

  • Drop-in leisure skating for adults (16+)
  • Figure skating and speed skating are not allowed
  • CSA-approved skate aids are allowed
  • Sign in at the Customer Service Desk and follow public skate rules

Adult and Senior Shinny Hockey

  • Drop-in program
  • Sign in at the Customer Service Desk and get a coloured band
  • CSA-approved helmets are required
  • Full hockey equipment is recommended
  • All skill levels are welcome
  • Body checking, lifting and slap shots are not permitted
  • Respect fellow players and play fairly; even shift play is necessary

Family and Youth Shinny Hockey

  • Inclusive drop-in program
  • All players need a coloured band from the front desk before playing
  • CSA-approved helmets and full hockey gear are mandatory
  • All levels of players are welcome
  • More experienced players should treat others respectfully
  • Body checking and aggressive play are forbidden
  • Lifting and slap shots are not permitted
  • Passing and sharing the puck are encouraged
  • Staff monitor play to ensure fair and equal ice time
  • Everyone must follow staff instructions

This program is for registered, insured figure skaters and their coaches.

  • Sign in at the Customer Service Desk
  • Coaches must be on the ice with their skaters
  • Maximum 15 skaters on the ice
  • Coaches share ice and music time
  • Do not perform lifts, throws or jumps during these sessions

Lace up your skates and roll into a fun-filled evening the whole family will love! Family Roller Skating Night is the perfect opportunity to enjoy active time together in a welcoming, upbeat atmosphere. Whether you're a seasoned roller skater or trying it for the first time, this event is all about laughter, movement, and making memories on wheels. All skaters must follow the “Public Skating Code of Conduct” and helmets are strongly encouraged. Located on an arena floor.

Grab a stick and join us for Family Floor Hockey Drop-In — a fun, casual time for families to play together! This unstructured session is perfect for all skill levels, whether you're learning the basics or just looking to enjoy a friendly game. Participants can jump in, get active, and share the excitement of hockey in a safe, welcoming environment. It’s a great way to build skills, stay active, and enjoy quality family time while connecting with others in the community. Equipment is available, or feel free to bring your own. All ages welcome — just bring clean indoor shoes, energy, and a readiness to play! Located on an arena floor.

Skating Lessons

Group skating classes and private lessons are available through our Learn-to-Skate or Power Skating programs.

Pre-registration is required. Learn more about our skating lesson options below and register online, in person or by phone at 613-966-4632.

Skate/equipment rentals are not available.

Lessons are organized by age and skill level.

  • Preschool Learn to Skate is for children ages 3 to 5.
  • Discover Skate is for ages 6 and up.

Both Preschool and Discover Skate programs include Star 1 to Star 4 levels. Preschool Learn to Skate lessons are further divided into parented (A) and un-parented (B) classes.

Equipment Requirements

Skates, a CSA-approved helmet, and mittens or gloves are mandatory for all participants. Parents or guardians on the ice must also wear skates, helmets and gloves.

Registration and Cancellation Details

Registration closes four weeks after lessons begin to allow participants as much time as possible to complete the required skills for their level.

Star Level Descriptions

There are four Star levels in our skating program.

Star 1 (Beginners) will learn:

  • Balancing on two feet
  • Falling down and getting up safely
  • Marching on the spot
  • Walking and jumping
  • Forward gliding
  • Stopping

Participants must complete all Star 1 skills before advancing.

Star 2 will learn: 

  • Backward skating
  • Forward and backward glides
  • Turning
  • Snowplow stops
  • Crossovers

Participants must complete all Star 2 skills before advancing.

Star 3 will learn:

  • Forward slalom
  • Backward gliding
  • Jumping
  • Forward gliding on a curve
  • Forward circle thrusts on a curve
  • Figure-eight crossovers

Participants must complete all Star 3 skills before advancing.

Star 4 will learn:

  • Backward jumps
  • Backward gliding on a curve
  • Backward slalom
  • One-foot spins
  • Backward circle thrusts
  • Backward crossovers

Private and Semi-Private Lessons

Private and semi-private lessons are available for all ages.

  • Private lessons are offered in a one-to-one format.
  • Semi-private lessons are offered in a one-to-two or one-to-three format.

Power skating focuses on improving speed, balance, stopping, stride and posture. Beginner, intermediate and advanced levels are available.

This is not a learn-to-skate program.

Equipment Requirements

Full hockey equipment is required. Sticks and CSA-approved helmets are mandatory.

Level Prerequisites

  • Beginner (ages 6 to 9) – Designed for players up to the U9 (under 9) hockey level.
  • Intermediate (ages 9 to 12) – Participants must have completed two beginner sessions.
  • Advanced (ages 12+) – Participants must be 12 years of age or older or receive approval from the power skating instructor.
