Since 2009, the City of Belleville has been installing solar panels on city-owned rooftops to create a new revenue stream while providing clean, renewable energy back to the electricity grid. Collectively, we have 885 kW of installed solar capacity generating over 700 Mwh annually. That's enough electricity to power 65 homes for a year!

The City of Belleville entered into 20-year contracts with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) for all six of our solar energy projects, as detailed in the table below. As part of Ontario's feed-in tariff (FIT) program, we are guaranteed income for the energy our panels generate for the life of our contracts.

Funding for the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre project was completed using the Federal Gas Tax, with no actual costs being passed to City of Belleville taxpayers. The remaining projects have been funded through the City of Belleville's Capital Projects process.
