Brief History

Fire protection in Belleville dates back to 1840, when a volunteer fire brigade was first established. Over time, the department evolved from volunteer service to a fully career department in 1916, while continuing to support volunteer firefighting in rural areas. Today, Belleville Fire and Emergency Services remains committed to protecting the community through modern training, equipment and service delivery.

Leadership

Belleville Fire and Emergency Services is led by Fire Chief and Director Dan Smith, who was appointed in 2023 and brings over 20 years of experience in fire and emergency services.

Under Chief Smith’s leadership, the department continues to modernize operations, expand staffing, and strengthen emergency response services to meet the needs of a growing community.

The department’s operations and future direction are guided by the City’s 2024 Fire Master Plan, which establishes a long-term strategy for fire and emergency services based on community risk, safety priorities and council-approved budget allocations.
