Why Hydrants are Flushed
Hydrant flushing is a routine maintenance activity that:
- removes sediment from water mains
- helps maintain water clarity in the distribution system
- checks hydrant operation and water pressure for firefighting
This work helps keep the municipal water system safe and reliable.
What to Expect During Flushing
While hydrant flushing is taking place in your area, you may notice:
- temporary water discolouration
- reduced water pressure in some areas
The water remains safe to use. If your tap water appears reddish or cloudy:
- Run a cold water tap until the water runs clear.
- Avoid doing laundry until the water clears to prevent staining.
Water Conservation
Hydrant flushing takes place during the summer when water demand is highest. Residents are encouraged to use water responsibly to help reduce strain on the municipal water system.
